CARBON WHEEL RECYCLING: HOW DOES IT WORK?

Carbon wheel recycling is a key challenge when it comes to reducing the environmental impact of mountain biking. At Shore-Carbon, we implement concrete solutions to give composite materials a second life.

At Shore-Carbon, our wheels are designed to last. But even the best carbon can eventually give in after seasons of intense riding. Rather than seeing your rims end up forgotten in a garage—or worse, in landfill—we wanted to offer an alternative: recycle, repurpose, and reward.

Which parts can be recycled?

The rim is the only carbon component of our wheels.

And it’s also the most complex part to recycle.

Made from carbon fibers and epoxy resin, it cannot be melted down or sorted like metal or conventional plastic. However, it can be crushed, repurposed, or transformed into technical granules that are then used in other industries such as furniture, sports equipment, industry, and R&D.

Even if it breaks completely, your rim can still be useful.

And if nothing can be recovered from it, we make sure it is handled by a responsible recycling channel, so it never ends up in a landfill.

What happens to a carbon rim once it’s broken?

A carbon rim from your Shore-Carbon wheels, even when broken, is never thrown away.

Once it’s back in our hands, it follows a very clear process:

Storage and sorting in our workshop

We start by removing all components:

  • spokes, nipples, rim tape, stickers

  • Then we clean the rim to keep only the bare carbon.

Material recovery via a specialized partner

The rims are then goruped and sent to a French Company capable of precessing carbon-epoxy composites.

Today, we work with two main partners in France:

👉 Alpha Recyclage Composites : Specialized in recycling thermoset composite materials

  • Use a solvolysis process to recover carbon fibers

  • Transform waste into reusable fibers or fillers for technical materials

👉 RecycleCompo / Cycl-add : Work with sports and automotive industry players

  • Recycle composites through crushing processes to create molded parts or granules

  • Repurpose carbon into urban furniture, tools, or technical panels

Recycled = Reused

Once processed by our partners, your old rims become :

  • components for the construction industry

  • reinforcement panels

  • industrial parts

  • or secondary raw material for R&D

It may no longer be a wheel, but it’s far from useless.
